Madame X’s Collection—A Significant Set of GIEN Earthenware
Born in Gien, Mrs. X comes from a long-established Gien family. Her family had ties to the pottery factory, having provided financial support to help the factory overcome its difficulties and having operated a well-known store that sold Gien pottery.
Mrs. X, deeply attached to her roots, devoted herself—once retired and despite living far from her hometown—to searching flea markets for any Gien pieces that struck her as noteworthy: whether for their decoration or their shape, and ensuring that nearly all of them dated back to the 19th or early 20th century.
She loved looking at this collection displayed in lighted showcases and experimented with the arrangement of the pieces in relation to one another to enhance their brilliance.
She liked to say, with a smile, that she remembered how what were now collectible pieces to her had, in her childhood, been a dish from which the dog drank or was fed, or the piece used to prop up the jam cabinet in the cellar to replace a missing leg.
But in everyone’s opinion—and her husband’s in particular, who loved to repeat it—the most beautiful piece from Gien was her, his wife. It must be said that he was born in Sarreguemines!
