Désiré MAGU (Tancrou, near Lizy-sur-Ourcq, Seine-et-Marne, c - Lot 1170
Désiré MAGU (Tancrou, near Lizy-sur-Ourcq, Seine-et-Marne, circa 1820 - Angers ? date unknown) Job Canvas, signed and dated on the right in the center: "Competition /from nature/ School of Lyon /The year 1848/ D. MAGU" (missing) 90 x 68 cm The artist was the son of the poet-weaver Louis Marie Eléonore Magu (1788-1860), whose verses were celebrated by by George Sand as representing the authentic working-class poetry of the people. According to some sources, he was a student at the Free School of the Museum of Nancy where he obtained a second prize in drawing and painting in September 1844, while he was a soldier in the 68th Line. It is understandable, given his father's profession, why he then enrolled at the National School of Fine Arts in Lyon, which prepared him for the silk industry. He is well known as a pupil of Bonnefond and as a participant in the competitions of the figure in Lyon in 1847 and 1848. (see "La Liberté, Journal de Lyon", n°158, dated August 27, 1848, http://collections.bm-lyon.fr/BML_01PER0030210161/ISSUE_PDF) He is known as the author of several portraits. Expert : Cabinet TURQUIN
