Pierre-Jean DAVID known as David of Angers (Angers 1788 Pari - Lot 346
Pierre-Jean DAVID known as David of Angers (Angers 1788 Paris 1856) Project of a pediment for the Palace of the Chamber of Deputies Black pencil, brown wash and white gouache highlights 15,7 x 36,3 cm Signed lower right, titled and dated lower center "Projet de fronton demandé pour le Palais de la chambre des députés en 1834" (Project for the pediment of the Palace of the Chamber of Deputies in 1834) Stains and freckles, pasted in full On the back of the frame a biographical label on David d'Angers Our drawing can be compared to two other studies of the same subject: - one preserved in the Carnavalet museum (Inv D.9433). The subject is also defined there as "The Oath of the Jeu de Paume - Bailly swears in the deputies. In one of the angles a ploughman leaves the hunt (?) to go and defend the Fatherland, in the other a bourgeois also seizes a weapon for the same reason". - the other one kept at the National Assembly. Our drawing, probably the last one, is the most accomplished of the three versions: the highlights and shading emphasize the relief and detail of the composition. Expert : Cabinet de Bayser
