This title may be regarded as the first collective work by Guillaume Du Vair (1556-1621), the parliamentarian who played an important mediating role during the troubles of the League, and who cultivated in his private life a kind of Christian stoicism very much in vogue throughout the 16th century. It had enormous spiritual influence in France until the 1660s, when it was replaced among the elite by the various attitudes inherited from the Catholic Reformation (Cioranescu, XVI, 9319.).
