ESTIENNE (Henri) & SCAPULA (Joannes). Lexicon Graecolatinum recentiss [...] Lugduni [Lyon], Antonium Candidum [Antoine Blanc], 1602. Fort in-8 of [1312] pp. n. ch.(sign. §⁸A-4F⁸ 4G⁴ 4H-4N⁸ 4O⁴). Marbled half calf, spine ribbed, red title p. (19th c. binding). Rubbed and paper tears on boards. Light foxing, wormholes in places. Abridged edition of Henri Estienne's Thesaurus Graecae linguae, compiled by Joannes Scapula. The German philologist and lexicographer Joannes Scapula (c.1540 - 1600) studied in Lausanne before moving to Geneva, where he was commissioned by Henri Estienne to correct the Thesaurus Grecae Linguae. He took advantage of the opportunity to write an abridged version, which was published shortly after the original and sold at a lower price, ruining its marketability...
