Written in Fresnes prison, Miracle de la rose is, along with Notre-Dame des Fleurs, one of two novels that Jean Genet wrote during periods of incarceration. In it, he alternates between memories of the Mettray penal colony, where he was imprisoned at the age of sixteen, and memories of prison at the Maison Centrale de Fontevrault, a prison that the real Genet never visited; the writer was at the Fresnes penitentiary when the book was written. He recalls his years of confinement, "in the most beautiful place in the most beautiful Touraine".
