[Paris], Quiber-Pallissaux imprint, [1795]. In-8, 8 pp. in ff. without cover. Taking part in the protection of a gigantic convoy loaded with wheat from America, the Vengeur was sunk on June 1, 1794 during violent battles with British ships. Before the National Convention, Barrère asserted that the entire crew had refused to surrender and had died shouting "Long live the Republic". This was the birth of a patriotic and revolutionary legend. The decree following the report stipulated that "the form of the vessel Le Vengeur shall be suspended from the vault of the Pantheon". In fact, many of Le Vengeur's sailors, including its captain, were taken in by the English. (Polak, no. 396). Expert: Madame Elvire POULAIN-MARQUIS
