Egypt - MADDEN (R. R.). Travels in Turkey, Egypt, Nubia, and - Lot 229
Egypt - MADDEN (R. R.). Travels in Turkey, Egypt, Nubia, and Palestine, in 1825, 1825, 1826 & 1827. Second edition. London, Whittaker, Treacher, and Co, 1833. 2 volumes in-8 brown basane, ornate ribbed spine, double gilt fillet framing the boards, title and greefer pieces missing, upper cuff of volume I worn. Amusing portrait of the author, in Syrian costume, taking the pulse of a female hand through a half-open door, engraved and watercolored on the frontispiece of Volume I. In this epistolary work, Dr. Madden tackles a wide range of themes: harems, slave markets, religion, crime and punishment, politics, but also medicine. In his preface, he wryly recalls the trials of a traveler in the East, telling of being mistaken for a spy in Syria, threatened with death in Candia for refusing to poison someone, repeatedly targeted by Turkish soldiers in Chania and on the Nile, accused of alchemy in Thebes, witchcraft in Nubia, and even captured by Greek pirates for wearing a long beard on board a ship laden with Turkish goods. (Blackmer 801.) Expert : Madame Elvire POULAIN-MARQUIS
