Secretary to Cardinal de Retz, the Scotsman Mentet de Salmonet was commissioned at the beginning of the Fronde to write and print a recent history of the revolutions in England, in order to chart a course of action in the coming Parisian troubles. His chronicle covers the period 1633-1646 in Great Britain, during the reign of Charles I and the civil war between the Royalists and the Puritans led by Olivier Cromwell. A very fine copy.
