[PRADE (Jean Le Royer de)]. Discourse on tobacco, with speci - Lot 301
[PRADE (Jean Le Royer de)]. Discourse on tobacco, with special reference to powdered tobacco. Paris, Le Prest, 1668. In-12, granite calf, spine ribbed and decorated.
First edition illustrated with 3 in-text woodcuts of tobacco plants. This is one of the earliest works on the subject. The work appeared under the pseudonym Baillard, which was replaced in the next edition, given in 1677, by the author's real name: Jean Le Royer de Prade (1640-1685), Cyrano de Bergerac's friend.
A staunch supporter of the use of tobacco, for smoking but above all for snuff, he distinguishes three varieties: masle tobacco, female tobacco and petit tabac. He gives details of its cultivation, refutes the negative opinions of certain doctors, and details its benefits: curing rheumatism, improving the imagination and memory, healing ulcers, etc. Part of the book details the various ways of preparing tobacco, alone or mixed with various substances.
A fine copy, with some minor wear or old restorations.
