ROQUES (Joseph). Plantes usuelles, indigènes et exotiques, d - Lot 302
ROQUES (Joseph). Plantes usuelles, indigènes et exotiques, dessinées et coloriées d'après nature, avec la description de leurs caractères distinctifs et de leurs propriétés médicales. Paris, l'Auteur, 1809. 2 volumes in-4, glazed green half calf, long ornate smooth spines, double gilt fillet on covers (Romantic period binding).
Second edition printed entirely on vellum (Brunet IV, 1388).
Illustrated with 133 hand-watercolored plates, including a frontispiece, with serpents.
This work is the fruit of the collaboration between Joseph Roques, an eminent physician and botanist, and Jacques Grasset Saint-Sauveur, a prolific aquafortist, draftsman and polygrapher. It is preceded by a précis on the external parts of plants and an overview of the methods of Tournefort, Linné and Jussieu. Each plant is designated by its vulgar name and by the name adopted by Linné. In addition, Linné's class and order, Tournefort's class and Jussieu's family are also mentioned.
A fine, fresh copy, with some minor wear and old restorations.
