Published in the year of Bourguet's death, this work, written in the form of letters, is considered one of the first treatises on paleontology in the French language.
The son of Huguenot refugees, Bourguet settled in Neuchâtel in 1715, and in 1731 was entrusted with the chair of philosophy and mathematics recently founded by the city's Conseil de la Bourgeoisie.
