Vulcanology - DELLA TORRE (Giovanni Maria). Storia e fenomen - Lot 310
Vulcanology - DELLA TORRE (Giovanni Maria). Storia e fenomeni del Vesuvio. Naples, Raimondi, 1755. In-4, half marbled calf, smooth mute spine (period binding).
First edition of this magnificently illustrated study of the volcanic activity of Vesuvius by the Italian naturalist and philosopher Della Torre, with 9 fold-out plates.
His monograph is the result of over twenty years of field observations and published studies by numerous international scientists such as Nollet, Lalande, Ferber, etc., who regularly climbed Vesuvius with Della Torre as their guide.
Here, the author not only presents an analysis of eruptive materials and the mechanics of eruptions, but also defines, perhaps for the first time explicitly, the history of a volcano not as a sequence of external phenomena, but as an internal construction process facilitated by such phenomena.
A fine copy, with some minor wear or old restorations.
