BWA, Black Volta region, Burkina Faso. - Lot 120
BWA, Black Volta region, Burkina Faso. Hardwood, polychrome natural pigments. Among the Bwa, blade masks testify to the necessary communication between Heaven and Earth, combining certain key elements of the creation myth, drawn from the "Do", with signs adapting each mask to the personal history of the clan ancestor, of which it is the emblem. Large "Nwantantay" plank mask consisting of an almost circular face topped by a hook evoking a hornbill's beak, the eyes symbolized by concentric circles. The face is surmounted by a rectangular, vertical superstructure in the shape of a plank, ending in a crescent that opens towards the sky. The decoration on both sides is composed of graphic motifs, symbols of the rules that frame and correct moral behavior and the conduct of life. First half of the 20th century. Height: 152 cm.
