Carlos SCHWABE (1866-1926) - Lot 2010

Carlos SCHWABE (1866-1926) Oriental couple in a garden (illustration project), circa 1891-1894 Ink, watercolor and white gouache on cardboard, signed lower right. Fold 30.5 x 19.5 cm The treatment in watercolor enhanced with white gouache to emphasize supernatural and mystical effects, as well as the ornamentation that is both decorative and symbolically complex, and certain motifs (the scent of perfume, the irises, the lower band with the woman with outstretched hands, the mystical perspective in the distance) are typical of Schwabe and can be compared to the illustrations for L'Évangile de l'enfance by Catulle Mendès (1892-1894) and Le Rêve by Zola (1891-1892). While the subject matter, perhaps inspired by certain animations from the 1889 World's Fair, in particular the Khmer costumes, is new to the known oeuvre, the virtuoso watercolor drawing technique and composition are highly characteristic of the artist. A certificate from Mr. Jean-David Jumeau-Lafond will be given to the buyer. Expert : Cabinet Perazzone-Brun
